《A unique bookstore in Hualien》 My local tour guide cum driver shared an article on this bookstore - 一本書店 as she knows I enjoy visiting bookstores and reading books. After successfully battled cancer at late 40s, owner - Ms. Miru and her husband moved their family from Taichung to Hualien. At the same time, they relocated their bookstore to Hualien to start afresh and to fulfil her lifetime goal. Her life motto is "Life is abundance so long as we have books and food." 一本書店 is an independent bookstore located in a quiet alley and is a revamped old house. The bookstore is decorated with small handwritten notes and antedots by Ms. Miru journaling her thinking, books recommendations and etc. Bookshop is quiet, have a good spread of chinese books across various genres and you can spend hours inside if you love books. There is a minimum spend of ntd100 which can be easily used either by purchasing books, drinks, handmade desserts or daily meals specials. If your book purchases exceed ntd2000, they can help you to deliver within Taiwan or overseas (postage fees applies). I was lucky enough to met Ms. Miru and had a chat with her. My friend jokingly asked her for a book recommendation after sharing her problems. To our surprise, she told us it is a common qns she encountered and we are imspired by the advices Ms. Miru gave as they are carefully thought of and to the point. Talking to her is like reading a good book. And through her, I truly understand that reading can build up your knowledge and shape your personality and thoughts. Owner Ms. Miru intend to move back to Taichung by mid this year or end of this year, location TBA. Additionally, just wish to share another reason of posting such a long review. The owner had accidentally uncharged me for my books postage to SG (I believed she may have used express service due to chinese new years as the books arrived before I touched down in SG). They kindly omitted this info but I realized it myself when I was looking at the postage tracking receipt. I offered to pay the balance and they told me since it is their mistake, I can pay when I visit them the next time (which could means never for some tourists 😱). I handed the money to my Hualien good friend to help pass to the owner but just wanted to share that I am really touched. Tip: Please check their Facebook Page for latest update on operating days and hours. In Hualien, it is quite common that actual operating days and hours differ from Google Map. If shop have FB page, check that. If not give them a call before going. You will need to Facebook private message them for meal reservation. =) Please also note that no photography allowed inside the shop.

Such a lovely little bookstore + café! We stumbled on it while wandering around and wasting some time in Hualien before our scheduled train, and I'm so glad we did! It's in a residential neighborhood with lots of narrow little streets. There are a few tables for single and more people throughout the shop, and we had refreshing fruit lemonade and yoghurt with nuts and brown sugar. The book selection looked great as well, mostly in Chinese though.

Attended the "Audio Appreciation Experience of the Great Mongolian Era" hosted by Teacher Wang of Gu Dian Le Zang. On a Sunday afternoon, I was immersed in a bookstore, listening to Taiwanese songs from the 1950s and 60s. It's unbelievable, but true, that Taiwanese cinema once made Taiwan the world's third-largest exporter of audiovisual media, as certified by the United Nations. Unfortunately, later, Taiwanese faced comprehensive suppression from the Taipei government internally, and externally, its withdrawal from the United Nations resulted in the loss of its international identity, leading to constant pressure from the Beijing government. "An Unwilling Film History—Once Upon a Time, Taiwan Had a Hollywood" can only be found in books now!

It's been so long! I couldn't help but tear up after leaving the store; I missed you all so much. I've been through a lot these past few years and know how difficult it has been, but this bookstore has always given people energy and love. We don't want to stop for a few years; we'll keep running it forever. The banana drink was absolutely amazing, and Miru is the best! 🥰🥰🥰
