Kumquat Coffee HLP

This is a small coffee shop on York in L.A. They have the usual assortment of coffeehouse beverages, but also some interesting specialty drinks such as lychee hongcha latte made with powdered Korean back tea and lychee syrup and topped with flower petals. Their masala chai latte is really nice, spicy and not too sweet. They have pastries from the Foundry most days. I found the ones we got to be surprisingly disappointing. My kouign amann was dry and overcooked. The mustard sausage roll was basically a hot dog in puff pastry. They only let in 4 groups at a time. The line varied in length, but there always was a line. They are pretty fast with the drinks, but the place does not have a super friendly vibe . The drinks are fantastic, but choose your pastry carefully!

I heard of this place for the first time from a YouTuber and knew I had to check it out. I finally found time to visit the coffee shop. I make my pour over coffee at home all the time and wanted to try one by a real barista. Well, let’s just say that this place doesn’t make it better than mine. Theirs tasted very watered down. I also didn’t find it easy to choose the coffee beans that they sell because the roast levels are not labeled. Furthermore, their breakfast bacon burrito was nothing special. It was a little salty for my liking, but I did like the salsa it came with. Overall, it was disappointing. This place doesn’t have parking, so you must find street parking, which wasn’t easy. The service could be better. I’m not sure I will go out of my way to come here.

Really good spot. I was able to find street parking easily and it was not too busy on a Saturday afternoon. They also have a lot of accessories and items for sale besides just their drinks. For drinks, I ordered a matcha latte and the Kumquat Tonic. The Kumquat Tonic, which is tonic water with espresso and a hint of kumquat, was the best espresso tonic drink I have had. The kumquat adds a really unique flavor and the espresso quality was great. The matcha latte was good too, above average I would say, but their coffee drinks are really where they shine. There is outdoor seating available if you want to hang out. Definitely a spot worth checking out.

Food: 3/5 Service: 5/5 Atmosphere: 2/5 I saw a friend post about this spot on Instagram and I decided to check it out with my family. Kumquat doesn’t have its own parking so you’ll need to get lucky with street parking out front or park in the nearby residential areas. When you arrive you’ll notice a small outdoor patio with very limited seating. Inside, there’s an eight-person capacity and depending on the timing, you may have to wait outside for a bit. The interior layout could definitely be improved as the line tends to spill into the space and personal space isn’t always respected. Just something to be prepared for. The coffee was solid overall. If you’re into cold brew, they offer several options. My wife ordered the vanilla iced latte which was very tasty and well balanced. We didn’t try much of the food, but we did have the ham and cheese croissant. It was good though it left a bit to be desired. The ham was rolled into the center and the end resul is a lot of bread and not much ham in each bite. If that floats your boat then by all means. Overall, I enjoyed the coffee and for the price of a large cold brew around five to six dollars it’s not a bad option at all.
